President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has resigned from his position, bringing his tenure as head of Nigerian football administration to an end.
Gusau announced his resignation on Thursday, August 27, 2026, during a press briefing in Abuja, following weeks of mounting pressure over the state of Nigerian football.
The NFF President said his decision followed consultations with his family, friends and key stakeholders. He also disclosed that he had advised members of the NFF Executive Committee to consider stepping down from their positions.
The development comes amid growing criticism of the NFF leadership following a series of setbacks involving Nigeria’s national teams.
The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while the Super Falcons recently missed qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, ending Nigeria’s record of appearing at every edition of the women’s tournament since its inception in 1991.
The federation has also faced increasing scrutiny over its administration and finances, with investigations reportedly examining the utilisation of government intervention funds provided to support Nigerian football.
Gusau, who was elected NFF President in September 2022, had been due to face the federation’s next elective congress, which was scheduled for September 27, 2026, in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
Meanwhile, NFF General Secretary Dr Mohammed Sanusi has also resigned, while several members of the federation’s Executive Committee are reported to have stepped down. The NFF has confirmed the resignation of Gusau, members of the Executive Committee and Sanusi.
The mass resignations are expected to have major implications for the immediate administration of Nigerian football, with attention now turning to the next steps for the federation and the future of the scheduled electoral process.
