The First Vice President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Abubakar Ladan Zurmi, has arrived in Accra ahead of the ongoing 24th African Senior Athletics Championships, expressing confidence in Team Nigeria’s readiness to excel at the continental competition.
Speaking shortly after arriving at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, Zurmi commended the Local Organising Committee and the Confederation of African Athletics for the quality of arrangements put in place for the championship.
He described the atmosphere at the event as well-organized, coordinated, and athlete-friendly.
According to the AFN Vice President, Nigeria’s contingent arrived fully prepared, with both home-based and foreign-based athletes demonstrating discipline, dedication, and commitment throughout their training programmes.
“Team Nigeria has come prepared. Our athletes, both home-based and foreign-based, have shown discipline and commitment in training. I charge them to go out and make the nation proud with courage, focus, and the true spirit of sportsmanship,” Zurmi said.
He also praised the National Sports Commission for its continued support towards athlete welfare and adequate preparations, noting that such backing significantly boosts the morale of competitors ahead of major international events.
Zurmi further acknowledged the role of the media in promoting athletics in Nigeria and keeping supporters informed about Team Nigeria’s performances in Accra.
Tribute to Late CAA President
Beyond the championship, Zurmi paid tribute to the late President of the CAA, whose passing has plunged the African athletics community into mourning.
In a condolence message delivered on behalf of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria and the Nigerian athletics family, he described the late administrator as a dedicated leader whose contributions to athletics development across Africa would be remembered for years to come.
“It is with deep sorrow that I, on behalf of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria and the entire Nigerian athletics family, extend our heartfelt condolences to the Confederation of African Athletics, the family, and the athletics community across Africa on the passing of the CAA President,” he stated.
“His leadership and dedication to the growth of athletics on the continent will be remembered. At this moment of grief, our thoughts and prayers are with his family and the CAA. May his soul rest in perfect peace.”
