Pep Guardiola: I have never trusted anything with VAR

Pep Guardiola says he has “never trusted anything” involving referees and VAR after another controversial decision impacted the Premier League title race.

The Manchester City manager made the comments after Arsenal FC moved five points clear at the top of the table with a 1–0 win over West Ham United. The Hammers thought they had scored a late equaliser, only for VAR to rule it out for a foul on goalkeeper David Raya.

City now have the opportunity to reduce the gap to two points when they host Crystal Palace FC.

    Guardiola Questions VAR

Speaking ahead of the clash, Guardiola insisted his players must focus on their own performances rather than officiating decisions.

“We lost the two FA Cup finals because the referees didn’t do their job that they should do. Even the VAR,” Guardiola said.

“I have never trusted anything [with VAR] since I arrived a long time ago.

“You have to do it better yourself. That is Crystal Palace, focus, focus and focus.”

The Spaniard stressed that Manchester City’s fate depends on their own standards, not outside decisions.

“What you cannot control, forget about it,” he added. “Do better than what you have not done better this season.”

Guardiola also dismissed suggestions that Crystal Palace may ease off with a UEFA Conference League final approaching.

Palace manager Oliver Glasner recently stated that his responsibility is to do what is best for Palace, not for Arsenal or City.

Despite possible squad rotation, Guardiola expects a difficult contest.

“They are so professional. Crystal Palace will play top against us,” he said.

    Injury Updates

City could receive a boost with Rodri nearing a return from a groin injury after missing four matches.

Defender Abdukodir Khusanov is also recovering, with Guardiola confirming both players are improving and will be assessed ahead of the match.
