Falconets Qualify for 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Despite Malawi Defeat

Nigeria women’s national under-20 football team have secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Poland after edging Malawi women’s national under-20 football team 3–2 on aggregate.

Despite suffering a 2–1 defeat in the second leg in Lilongwe on Saturday, Nigeria’s first-leg advantage proved decisive in sealing another appearance at the global tournament.

The Falconets had established a strong foundation in Ikenne a week earlier, courtesy of an own goal by Malawi defender Maureen Kenneth and a brilliant strike from Kindness Ifeanyi, giving Nigeria a 2–0 advantage heading into the return fixture.

Backed by a passionate home crowd, the Young Scorchers started aggressively and took an early lead after a defensive lapse in the Nigerian backline allowed a Malawian attacker to head home.

Nigeria nearly responded immediately when Kindness Ifeanyi delivered a dangerous cross for Favour Nkwocha, whose powerful effort struck the woodwork.

Malawi increased the pressure in the second half, capitalising on another Nigerian defensive error in the 55th minute to make it 2–0 on the day and level the aggregate score at 2–2.

With the tie slipping into dangerous territory, head coach Moses Aduku introduced Precious Oscar from the bench, and the substitution proved decisive.

Oscar capitalised on hesitation in the Malawian defence, winning possession high up the pitch before calmly finishing past the goalkeeper in the 62nd minute to restore Nigeria’s aggregate lead.

The Falconets then showed composure and resilience in the closing stages to protect their advantage and maintain Nigeria’s remarkable record of qualifying for every FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup tournament.

The 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup will take place in Poland from September 5 to 26.

Following the match, the Nigerian delegation expressed appreciation to Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Malawi, Ambassador Ibrahim Miringa, and embassy staff for their support and hospitality throughout the team’s stay in the country.
