
Former Chelsea FC captain César Azpilicueta has announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a remarkable 20-season career.
In an emotional farewell letter addressed to football fans around the world, the Spanish defender revealed that the current season would be his last as a professional player.
“Today, I want to share with you that this season will be my last as a professional footballer,” Azpilicueta wrote.
“After so many years living my dream, I feel it’s time to start a new chapter in my life.”
The former Spain international reflected on his journey from playing football as a child in Pamplona to representing some of Europe’s biggest clubs and competing on football’s grandest stages.

Throughout his career, Azpilicueta played for CA Osasuna, Olympique de Marseille, Chelsea FC, Atlético de Madrid, and Sevilla FC.
He also represented Spain at major international tournaments.
Azpilicueta paid tribute to teammates, coaches, staff, fans, and family members who supported him throughout his career.
“To the fans: your passion and support inspired me to give my best every day,” he wrote.
“I hope you saw a player who always gave everything for your colours, with pride and heart.”

Widely respected for his leadership, consistency, and professionalism, Azpilicueta enjoyed a trophy-laden spell at Chelsea, where he captained the club to major honours, including the UEFA Champions League.
The defender concluded his message by expressing gratitude for the lessons football had taught him, including teamwork, humility, sacrifice, and respect.
