Senegal paraded the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy on Saturday at the Stade de France in Paris, despite being ordered to return the title by the Confederation of African Football.
The ceremony took place ahead of an international friendly against Peru, drawing thousands of fans in a show of solidarity with the Teranga Lions. CAF had earlier overturned Senegal’s 1–0 victory over Morocco in the AFCON final played on January 18 in Rabat, awarding a 3–0 result to the hosts following disciplinary action.
Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly led his teammates onto the pitch with the trophy for a lap of honour after a pre-match performance by renowned Senegalese artist Youssou N’Dour. Koulibaly, alongside goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, later placed the trophy in the presidential box in the presence of football officials, including federation president Abdoulaye Fall.
The controversy stems from the AFCON final, where Senegal players briefly walked off the pitch in protest after a late penalty was awarded to Morocco. Although the team returned to complete the match—eventually winning through an extra-time goal by Pape Gueye—CAF ruled that the walk-off constituted a breach of regulations, resulting in forfeiture.
Senegal’s football authorities have since appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, signaling their determination to retain the title.
Supporters turned out in large numbers for the occasion, with thousands already inside the stadium ahead of kickoff and others marching from the nearby Basilica of Saint-Denis in a vibrant display of unity. Local officials praised the gathering, describing it as a powerful moment of solidarity and pride for both Senegalese fans and the wider African community.
The match against Peru marked Senegal’s first outing since the AFCON final, as the team continues preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, where they are set to face France, Norway, and either Bolivia or Iraq in the group stage.
