Gueye Reacts as Senegal Stripped of AFCON Title

Senegal captain Idrissa Gana Gueye has broken his silence following the decision by the Confederation of African Football to strip the Teranga Lions of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title and award it to Morocco.

Despite Senegal’s victory in the final, CAF overturned the result, ruling that the team had forfeited the match, thereby denying them official recognition as African champions.

Reacting via his Instagram story, the Everton midfielder reflected on the fleeting nature of trophies while emphasizing unity and national pride.

“Titles, trophies, medals… all of that is only temporary,” Gueye wrote.
“What really matters is that every supporter can go home and be reunited with their family.

“The Senegalese people have shown who they are: dignified in victory, dignified in adversity. That is Teranga.”

While expressing disappointment over the decision, Gueye maintained that the memories of that night remain untouchable.

“We know what we experienced that night in Rabat, and that, no one will ever be able to take away from us, God willing,” he added.

In a follow-up message, the 36-year-old struck a tone of resilience, stating simply: “We will bounce back.”
