Enzo Fernandez rescued a dramatic point for managerless Chelsea with a stoppage-time equaliser as Manchester City were held to a 1–1 draw at the Etihad Stadium, dealing a blow to their Premier League title pursuit.
The encounter came just three days after Chelsea’s shock decision to part ways with head coach Enzo Maresca. With former Brighton boss Liam Rosenior reportedly the leading candidate to take over, assistant Calum McFarlane was placed in temporary charge for the daunting trip to Manchester.
City, aiming to cut the gap on league leaders Arsenal, dominated large spells but were ultimately left frustrated. The result leaves Pep Guardiola’s side six points adrift of the Gunners.
City Lead, Chelsea Hang On
Manchester City took the lead in the 42nd minute through Tijjani Reijnders, who unleashed a fierce left-footed strike beyond the reach of the goalkeeper. Earlier, Erling Haaland had come close to opening the scoring, rattling the woodwork during a strong first-half display from the hosts.
After the break, City continued to press, carving out several promising openings, but a lack of clinical finishing proved costly.
Late Drama at the Etihad
Chelsea, who largely soaked up pressure, struck deep into stoppage time. A makeshift City defence, unsettled further by an injury to Josko Gvardiol, failed to clear Malo Gusto’s cross. The loose ball fell kindly to Fernandez, who bundled home at the second attempt in the 94th minute to snatch a share of the spoils.
For Chelsea, the result provides a morale boost amid managerial uncertainty, while City are left to rue missed opportunities in a title race that continues to tighten.
