Former Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has received the official certificate of his Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) national honour, conferred on him by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Troost-Ekong confirmed the development via his X page, revealing that the certificate was delivered to him following the announcement made the previous night. The experienced defender described the recognition as a deeply proud moment for himself and his family.
“I am honoured and grateful to His Excellency, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, for conferring on me the MFR national honour. I received the official certificate today following the announcement last night. It’s a very proud moment for me and my family,” he said.

Reflecting on his journey with the national team, the former captain spoke passionately about what Nigeria and the Super Eagles mean to him.

“Nigeria gave me my identity, my purpose, and the platform to live my dream through football. Wearing the green and white has always been a great responsibility, privilege, and a promise to give everything for the badge and for our people,” Troost-Ekong added.
The defender also used the moment to rally support for the Super Eagles, who begin their Africa Cup of Nations campaign today. He expressed confidence in the squad and reaffirmed his commitment to backing the team.
“As our Super Eagles begin their AFCON journey today, I wish the team every success. As promised, I’ll be supporting them all the way. I believe in this group, our nation and what we can achieve.”
Troost-Ekong concluded by reaffirming his pride in representing Nigeria.
“I am, and will always be, proud to be Nigerian,” he declared.
The national honour recognises Troost-Ekong’s contributions to Nigerian football, including his leadership role with the Super Eagles and his consistent service to the national team over the years.
