WAFCON Qualifier: Governor Abiodun Splashes N50m On Super Falcons Ahead of Benin Clash

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has boosted the morale of the Super Falcons of Nigeria with a N50 million reward ahead of their crucial second leg Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026 qualifier against the Amazons of Benin Republic.

The governor announced the gesture on Monday while receiving the senior women’s national team at his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta. The Falcons are in the state for Tuesday’s return leg of the final qualifying fixture, billed for the Moshood Abiola Sports Arena.

Governor Abiodun described the team’s return to Abeokuta as a strong validation of the state’s commitment to providing a conducive environment for sporting excellence. He revealed plans by his administration to further transform the stadium axis into a modern sports hub, with facilities including a four- or five-star hotel, cinema, and shopping complex.

While congratulating the Super Falcons for securing their historic 10th WAFCON title, Abiodun said the team’s exploits continue to underline Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football.

Super Falcons head coach, Justin Madugu, expressed delight over the warm reception the team always enjoys in Abeokuta, noting that the atmosphere at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena gives the players added confidence to deliver positive results.

Team captain, Rasheedat Ajibade, who spoke on behalf of the players, commended Governor Abiodun for his consistent support and investment in state-of-the-art sporting facilities. She assured that the Falcons will continue to make Nigerians proud whenever they wear the green-and-white jersey.

Nigeria holds a healthy advantage heading into Tuesday’s showdown with Benin, with qualification for the 2026 WAFCON in Morocco at stake.
